Ghana Launches 5MW Black Volta Solar Project, the Largest Floating Solar Project in West Africa.In what is set to be a significant step in increasing the national renewable energy capacity, Ghana has just launched 5MW Black Volta Solar Project. This solar project is now West Africa’s largest floating solar project. The west African country aims to increase its share of renewable energy from the current 1% to 10% by the year 2030.The pioneering 5MW floating solar installation is located at the Black Volta River. Additionally, the solar project was engineered by Ghanaian engineers from Bui Power Authority (BPA). This ambitious innovative outlines the commitment of Ghana to leveraging clean energy and reduce its overall carbon footprint.
Ghanaian authorities say the project is part of plans to raise the country's use of renewable energy from the current 1% to 10% by 2030. The pioneering floating solar installation is situated on the Volta River and was set up by Ghanaian engineers.
Minister of Energy and Green Transition John Jinapor said the project supports Ghana's "expanding economy". He said the country is now "prioritising solar, wind, and mini-hydro projects as part of our broader energy transition plan".
A senior official at the Bui Power Authority, which manages one of the country's hydroelectric dams, said the plan is to scale up the 5-megawatt project, "which is already generating power,"  to 65 megawatts.
Ghana marked a significant milestone in its pursuit of sustainable energy with the unveiling of West Africa’s largest floating solar power plant. Situated on the Black Volta River, this pioneering 5-megawatt installation, engineered by Ghanaian experts from the Bui Power Authority (BPA), is already generating power and represents a bold step toward the country’s ambitious renewable energy targets.
The project is a cornerstone of Ghana’s plan to increase its renewable energy share from the current 1% to 10% by 2030, a goal underscored by authorities as critical to supporting the nation’s expanding economy. Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative during the launch.
