Places to see in ( Nimes - France ) Tour Magne

The Magne tower is a Gallo-Roman monument located in Nîmes , Gard . More imposing vestige of the very long Roman enclosure of Nîmes, it dominates the gardens of the Fountain on Mount Cavalier. The Magne tower is a pre-Roman building transformed during the time of Augustus. The tower is now managed by Culturespaces as a public service delegation . It is mainly accessible by the gardens of La Fontaine . It is the subject of a classification as historical monuments by the list of 1840.

High of 18 m at the end of iii th century BC. J. - C. , then of 36 m of height at the time Roman , the tower does not measure today only 32,50 m. Thomas Platter sees it already hollowed out in 1596. It is composed of an octagonal basement , the irregularity of which is explained by the shape of the dry stone tower that it encompassed. The latter can still be seen inside the tower, in negative. A bend, 70 m long, of which it remains the departure to the south and part of the last arch, led to the walkway which traversed this first floor.

From there you could reach the curtain wall , which was on the same level, north and west. Above this stage integrated into the enclosure, the polygonal tower is totally blind. Access to the terrace, which originally crowned the whole, was then done by a staircase arranged inside the tower. The last two levels were decorated one of Tuscan pilasters , the other, which has almost completely disappeared, of columns .

Many hypotheses have been formulated about the original purpose of the tower. In Roman times, by its structure integrated into the enclosure, it could play a defensive role and that of a watchtower or signal. By doubling its height, the Roman power was also demonstrating its power. The Tour Magne, or the Great Tower, is the only remnant of the ancient Augustan fortifications. Standing at the highest point of the city, Mont Cavalier, it overlooks the entire plain and is a focal point for all means of communication.

The tower was originally a dry-stone oval tower, with a maximum height of 18m and already part of a rampart. A structure that was both prestigious and strategic, it represented sanctuary and protected the oppidum. By doubling its height and incorporating it into the town walls, Augustus demonstrated the new power of the colony of Nîmes over the “City” (in the territorial sense) of the Volcae. When the town’s population abandoned the higher ground, the Tour Magne nevertheless continued to play a military role. It was used to defend against the English during the Hundred Years’ War.
