Today, I want to highlight an issue that is personal to me and to so many others – the challenges faced by people living with Crohn's disease and Colitis.

As someone who lives with Crohn's, I understand how this lifelong condition affects daily life. In the past two weeks, four individuals from South Kildare have reached out to me, struggling to access necessary services due to their condition.

One person was denied a grant for a downstairs bathroom because Crohn's wasn't recognised as a qualifying condition by the local authority.
Others have had similar issues, including a woman whose application for invalidity pension was rejected, again because Crohn's wasn't considered a qualifying condition.

With nearly 50,000 people in Ireland living with Crohn's, Colitis, and IBD, it's crucial that these conditions are recognised for the serious challenges they present.

I’ve spoken with Amy Kelly, COO of Crohn's and Colitis Ireland, who is doing tremendous work, but the struggle continues in getting the government to acknowledge the true impact of these diseases.

I am calling on the Ministers for Health and Social Protection to recognise Crohn's and Colitis as the life-altering conditions they are and ensure those affected receive the support they need.
