Ohm Coffee Roasters in the North Bay strikes a perfect chord between caffeine and music. The name comes from Ohm’s Law of electrical resistance, "Coffee amps you up and all of our blends are named after different styles of guitar amplifiers," said founder Derek Bromley.

Bromley blended his passions for coffee and music to launch his business. As the lead guitarist of band Mama Said, Bromley names all of his blends after different styles of guitar amplifiers. For example, Ohm’s Tweed blend is named after the Fender Tweed amps of the 1950s, "I’m trying to capture the sonic essence of what an amplifier would be in the flavor profile of my coffees," he said.

With a background as a sommelier, Bromley knew he wanted to flex those skills and take on the challenge of becoming a roaster. He opened his own roasting facility in 2023. Bromley’s wife Jennifer Knight is the creative director of Ohm and one of the lead singers of their band. Knight said their music informs the coffee roasting and vice versa.

Controlling their own roast profiles has allowed Ohm’s menu to expand and offer a variety of unique flavors, "We can do many different kinds of pour overs, filter coffees. We can do craft chocolate coffees, we use dandelion chocolate and we even have a spicy dark mocha that has reishi mushroom and a little bit of habanero pepper in it," said general manager Peggy Lopez-Lacrosse.

As an idea that started as a food truck and turned into two brick and mortar shops in Napa and Sonoma, Bromley said it’s a dream come true, "Here I am making coffee by day, making music by night, partnering with my wife, and personal and professional. It’s been amazing."
