What is precision medicine in chronic diseases?

Precision medicines – targeting the right medicine to the right patient at the right time – have revolutionised the treatment of some cancers and rare genetic diseases, yet precision medicines for chronic diseases are far less common.   The challenge we face is that chronic diseases are biologically complex and driven by multiple mechanisms. It is for this reason that chronic diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) have seen little innovation in decades.

This video gives a simple animation to explain what precision medicine is and how we are digging deep into the biology of complex, chronic diseases and harnessing huge networks of data to uncover new knowledge and insights. We are using these to help us identify novel drug targets and biomarkers that characterise patient subgroups most likely to benefit. By matching the right treatment, to the right patient and intervening earlier we aim to change the course of chronic diseases and improve patient outcomes.
