The Earth on the Back of an Animal | Fantastical Stories in Quranic Commentaries | Dr. Shabir Ally

Quran 2:29 mentions that God created the Earth and the seven heavens. The commentators of the Quran, in trying to understand this verse, turned to traditions which were attributed to companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and likely based on what common people thought at the time. They did not consult astronomers, though Muslims were advanced in the sciences. Dr. Shabir Ally says this should give us pause; these commentators were drawing on their social milieu and cultural presuppositions to interpret the Quran, which could be faulty. In this case, they came up with a cosmological story that involves a whale and sometimes even a bull, all of which defies what we know about science.
