In June 2000, her mother and uncle orchestrated her murder in Punjab, India. Jaswinder was kidnapped, tortured, and killed, while her husband, Sukhwinder Singh, was left for dead. Though Indian authorities convicted several perpetrators, Jaswinder’s mother and uncle evaded justice for years before finally being extradited to India in 2019.

The second case follows Surjit Athwal, a 27-year-old British-Indian woman forced into an abusive arranged marriage at 16. After enduring years of domestic violence, she planned to divorce her husband and leave the family. Fearing the shame of divorce and financial loss, her mother-in-law, Bachan Athwal, lured Surjit to India under false pretenses in December 1998. There, Surjit was drugged, strangled, and her body dumped in a river. Bachan and her son were eventually convicted in the UK in 2007, marking the first successful prosecution of an honor killing committed abroad under British law.

These cases highlight the devastating consequences of rigid traditions that prioritize family honor over human life. Despite legal reforms, such crimes persist, underscoring the need for continued awareness and justice.
