Meharry Medical College and Nashville General Hospital (NGH) have signed a new multi-year Professional Services Agreement (PSA) to strengthen their partnership and improve access to care for Nashville’s most vulnerable communities.
According to officials, the agreement realigns operational ties between the two institutions and ensures that Meharry residents will continue completing their education and medical training at NGH under the guidance of Meharry faculty. The renewed partnership is also expected to expand access to essential medical services, improve patient care, and better support underserved populations across the city.
The updated PSA comes after years of strained relations between Meharry and NGH. The previous contract fell apart after Meharry leaders raised concerns that the hospital wasn’t living up to its role as the primary teaching hospital for Meharry students and residents.
"One thing that was missing was transparency, and a chance to participate in important decision-making,” Dr. James Hildreth, Meharry's CEO and President said. “We cannot train students or residents without a hospital partner, and it’s hard to do that if it’s not a true partnership.”
Dr. James E. K. Hildreth, Meharry’s President and CEO, has said that NGH began hiring its own physicians who weren’t obligated to teach students, which disrupted the original agreement and forced Meharry to send students to other hospitals in Tennessee and across six additional states.
The hospital’s consistently low patient census, sometimes dropping to as few as 30 patients despite a capacity of 150 beds, also made it harder for students to get the clinical experience they needed.
