It’s the summer sound you can’t avoid in Florida. “If it’s thundering, it’s going to lightning,” said Lee Health Injury Prevention Resource Coordinator Syndi Bultman.

The sunshine state averages 70 to 100 days with thunderstorms a year. “When you can hear it roar, you need to get inside,” said Bultman. Lightning can be deadly, and unfortunately, “Lightning strikes happen quite often. More than what we think.”

Syndi Bultman said when the storms start rolling in, “Don’t want to be by any body of water, don’t want to be on top of the hill, or out in the open. You want to get into a secure safe shelter.” Just because you’re inside, it doesn’t mean you’re perfectly safe. “Don’t stand by your windows and doors, don’t stand out on your covered patio, or in your garage or in your carport.”

Bultman said don’t shower or do dishes by hand when it’s storming. If you can’t find shelter and a storm is imminent, “You can get down into a crouching position and cover your head and your ears, because that only leaves your feet touching the ground.” Lightning can travel 10-12 miles from a thunderstorm, so if you can hear thunder, you’re too close and you need to get inside.
