The Maharashtra government has officially revoked the 5% reservation previously granted to socially and educationally backward Muslim communities in both education and government employment. This decision follows a period of legal and procedural uncertainty surrounding a 2014 ordinance. While the Bombay High Court had earlier stayed the reservation specifically for public employment, the ordinance was never converted into permanent law, leading to its eventual lapse. A fresh government resolution has now been issued to end the benefits for eligible Muslim groups, covering admissions, recruitment, and the issuance of certificates. This move effectively terminates a policy first introduced by the previous Congress-NCP administration.
