Istanbul, Turkey - Huge Explosion in Chemical Factory. Several injured in blast and fire at Istanbul chemical plant.

A raging fire marked by a massive explosion engulfed an Istanbul chemical factory on Wednesday, as firefighters struggled for two hours to contain the blaze, which injured at least two people, according to multiple reports.

During the fire in the Tuzla district on the Asian side of Turkey’s largest city, a metal tank exploded, spraying shrapnel into the area and sending observers scurrying, according to the BBC.

Two firefighters were injured in the blast, with one taken to hospital, pro-government Daily Sabah reported. China’s state-run Xinhua news reported that five civilians suffering from smoke inhalation were also taken to hospital.

The factory is part of the Orhanlı Leather Organized Industrial Zone, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Firefighting Division head Ali Karahan told reporters. Karahan said the fire was taken under control after 48 fire engines and 138 personnel took part in efforts to extinguish it.

Small explosions took place in the factory and one fire engine caught fire, along with cars in the plant parking lot.

Thick black smoke rising from the fire covered the area, some 3 kilometers east of Sabiha Gökçen International Airport.
