"You’re Welcome" is my response to the popular phrase, “Than you for your service.” Best to know what you're thanking me for.

I have been out of the Army for fifty years and have rarely seen my experiences reflected in news, literature, movies or much of anything else. The unrealistic images of action movies and video games seems to be affecting a population of which fewer than 1% have any military experience. This is my attempt to counter that, if only for my grandchildren. “Be all that you can be” had nothing to do with my experience.

I was nineteen when I went in and twenty-two when I got out. It is a strange setting for a coming-of-age story. The book includes four essays on troubling issues a young solder is forced to confront: racism, corruption, institutionalized prostitution, and censorship (inbound and outbound). There’s plenty of humor, too. At least I’m amused.
