So why am I setting up scaffolding in the living room of our brand-new house?
The plans called for beams on the ceiling in this room and now we have the time to finally get it done.
Plus, we can clean the ceiling fan while we’re up here.
The first thing I do is measure in 8” from the slope part of the ceiling and then snap a line.
Next, I use my stud detector to find where each roof truss is- these are on two-foot centers.
We’re gonna start building the beams by screwing 2x8s to the ceiling- I’m using Spruce because it’s so much lighter than Southern Yellow Pine.
I measure and cut these, so the splice lands on a truss.
We’re going to install the 2x8s with 4” T25 screws.
I get the screws started in the board, so I can hold the board up with one hand and the impact with the other.
Now this board gets completely covered up, it just gives us something to mount the maple sides.
I drew a diagram to show you exactly how we’re going to build these beams.
Here’s the 2x8 that we screwed to the ceiling, we will nail 1x8 maple to both sides, there will be nailer blocks for the bottom piece of maple to sit against giving us a ¼” reveal.
