I have come to the understanding that creativity is like a conversation between the conscious and the subconscious mind. The act of creativity works in a bi-directional feedback loop between intellect and emotions. The former provides the symbol and the latter - the content. Symbol gives shape to the emotion and emotions reciprocate by giving meaning, like two elevators transporting two forms of "cargo". I reached a real breakthough once this had been grasped. The project here is to render this two-way-translation process INTUITIVE. This video is a snapshot of my daily workout. The numbers you see here are all between 2 and 9. Before writing them on my whiteboard they were put in random order by a computer program to make sure I cannot memorize the sequence and thus "cheat". The goal lies in reading the numbers from left to right like a book. I have memorized 8 shapes: 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 &9. Each shape is a combination of slaps, pops and hammers-ons. The goal is to play the correct shape with no hesitation at the very instant a number comes along. The hammer-on in my left hand shows where each number begins. To activate the bi-directional feedback loop (mentioned at the beginning), the shapes born from numbers have to be anchored in gravity. For this I need two things: A tempo and a rate of subdivision. My rate of subdivision is 4 per beat (16th notes) and my tempo is around 80bpm. Why? I do this primarily because I love it. But there are also practical reasons. It sharpens my concentration and forces me to be in the moment. There is no space for negative distraction, positive or negative. After this I am ready to create, to innovate. If I can handle random numbers (the equivalent of musical entropy), everything else becomes easier in life. It also means I will never run out of ideas again as long as I remain healthy. In general, all ideas begin as "data" which comes along arranged in some symmetrial fashion. By training myself to stay centered in a musical environment completely void of patterns I get closer and closer to the REAL THING !
