New Guitar Tutorials every Monday

I know what you are thinking, click bait, but it's true! If you know how to to play the guitar, and even more so if you know how to play barre chords up and down the fretboard, I am going to give you enough of a base for the bass to fake mad skills at the next session. Now, let's give the bass guitar its credit, if you want to master it the same way you want to master the guitar you have to put in the work, years of it, but if you want enough to get you and your friends through the next jam session, maybe even play bass in your band next time your bass player can't make it, or maybe even take over the spot if your bass player gets deported like mine did! (Crazy story, Las Vegas, a mini-van rental, a shaman healer, a really hot craps table and a hostel room in the ghetto across from a very nefarious corner) then these skills will give you the foundation to do so.

The bass is tuned the same as the guitar without the B or high E strings, a five string bass adds the B string and a 6 string bass is tuned the exact same as a guitar, just an octave lower. That means when you are playing the barre strings up and down the neck of your guitar you are also locating the root note. So if you play an A barre chord with the root note on the 5th fret of the E string, you are able to locate the A note on the E string.

Using this knowledge you are able to locate the root notes of the chord and believe our not with your friends strumming the chord playing just the root note is enough to fill out the space.

So, we can find the root notes but we want to take it a step further. The next interval to add is the 5th, the 5th is in both major and minor chords, so locating it very easy to find and the same for all types of chords, down a string and two frets towards to the pick ups. The neutral sound works great for bass lines as well.

Next is the 3rd, this is the first one that varies depending on major or minor chords. You can use them but sometimes they add a little too much melody to the bass line so it is best to know where they are and experiment with them, but overall using them sparingly is a good idea. The major third is located by moving up a string and one fret towards the headstock. The minor third is located by moving up a string and the TWO frets instead of one.

The next interval is the octave, this is cool for some leaps or just to add some depth, you can play this one without adding to much melody to the bass keeping it fairly neutral, it is locate right underneath 5th, you have recognize this one from playing octave riffs on your guitar in the style of Jimi Hendrix or Wes Montgomery or just from playing power chords.

The last interval is the b7th and while yes you can play this over the dominant 7 chord, so you could use it in blues for example or at the end of a V7 chord in a regular I - IV - V it really sounds based attached to the minor chords making them minor 7 chords instead of just minor chords. Really good for some fun grooves.
