Started in 2017 by Andy Schumm, the Chicago Cellar Boys specializes in the jazz and hot dance styles of the 1920s and 30s. The group is based in Chicago, and can be found playing regularly all over the city.
Andy Schumm is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and arranger originally from Wisconsin. In the Cellar Boys, you can hear him play cornet, clarinet; and saxophone. On clarinet and alto saxophone, John Otto is a mainstay of Chicago jazz, and has appeared with many notable bands. Natalie Scharf is an old soul in a modern world, and her tenor playing shows it. Jim Barrett joined the band in 2020. The only way to describe his banjo playing is ferocious. Paul Asaro is perhaps the world's leading stride piano player, and his ability to play in the style of Jelly Roll Morton is unparalleled. Dan Anderson is equally adept on both the tuba and the string bass, and his steady rhythm helps place the Chicago Cellar Boys' sound firmly in the 1920s and 1930s.
Founded in 1980, Dixieland Monterey celebrates the roots of classic jazz, swing, and ragtime, and promotes the education of youth in the art of traditional jazz performance. Each year, enthusiasts from all over the United States and Canada travel to Monterey to enjoy some of the hottest traditional jazz and swing bands from the U.S. and around the world.
Dixieland Monterey exists to facilitate the live performance and broader appreciation of early jazz and other historically related music of the 1920s and ‘30s as part of our American musical heritage, and to educate and encourage young people to learn, appreciate and perform this music.
