Depression Weakens Over Central India as Cyclonic Storm Shakti Brews in Arabian Sea

In a relief for flood-weary regions in eastern India, a depression that battered Odisha and Chhattisgarh has weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area, even as a nascent cyclonic storm named "Shakhti" gathers strength off the Gujarat coast in the northeast Arabian Sea, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported Friday evening. The depression, which had been churning over interior Odisha and adjacent parts of Chhattisgarh, tracked nearly northwards before dissipating into the low-pressure system by 5:30 p.m. IST. It is now positioned over north Chhattisgarh, with extensions into northern interior Odisha and Jharkhand. Forecasters predict it will maintain a northward trajectory initially, shifting northeast towards Jharkhand, and further degrade into a standard low-pressure area within the next 12 hours. While the immediate threat of heavy downpours has eased, residents in these areas are advised to remain vigilant for scattered showers.Meanwhile, farther west, Cyclonic Storm "Shakhti" – pronounced "Shakhti" – edged northwest at 8 kmph over the past six hours, centering itself at approximately 22.0°N, 66.4°E by 5:30 p.m. IST. The storm is currently about 280 km west of Dwarka, 290 km west-southwest of Naliya, 330 km south-southwest of Karachi in Pakistan, and 320 km west of Porbandar in Gujarat.IMD officials warn that "Shakhti" is poised for escalation. It is expected to veer west-northwest initially, then swing west-southwest, bulking up into a severe cyclonic storm by Saturday morning, October 4. The system is forecast to press onward west-southwest, arriving at the central stretches of the northern and adjoining central Arabian Sea by Sunday, October 5. Fisherfolk and coastal communities along Gujarat's shores are urged to avoid venturing into open seas, with high winds and rough conditions anticipated. The day's weather patterns also left a trail of notable rainfall across the country. From 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. IST, East Uttar Pradesh saw the heaviest downpours, with 13 cm recorded at BHU Varanasi in Varanasi district, followed by 11 cm at Varanasi city center and 2 cm at Varanasi's Babatpur Airport. Rajasthan's Udaipur logged 8 cm, while Telangana's Gandipet in Rangareddy district matched that figure. Tamil Nadu reported 7 cm in Aruppukottai (Virudhunagar district) and 2 cm in Coonoor (Nilgiris). Other regions experienced lighter but significant falls: 5 cm in Sidhi (East Madhya Pradesh), 3 cm in Rewa, and 2 cm in Satna; 3 cm in Chandrapur (Vidarbha); 3 cm in Hut Bay (Andaman & Nicobar Islands) and 2 cm in Nancowry; 2 cm in Asansol (Gangetic West Bengal); 2 cm in Keonjhargarh (Odisha); 2 cm in Barapani/Shillong (Assam & Meghalaya); and 2 cm in Pasighat (Arunachal Pradesh). As the weekend approaches, the IMD continues to monitor both systems closely, emphasizing preparedness in vulnerable areas to mitigate any potential disruptions from ongoing monsoon remnants and emerging tropical activity. Updates will follow as conditions evolve.
