Seafood from Nepal 🇳🇵? Yes!

Well, it isn’t technically seafood… It is (very tasty) ‘River Food’ or ‘Freshwater food’.

I really hesitated to post this video because the place was quite dark ! But the food!! Wow! The ethnic Tharu cuisine is DELICIOUS! And it is the Tharu food that made me post this video.

There’s only ONE restaurant in Kathmandu offering traditional dishes of the indigenous Tharu community: 'Barghar restaurant'!

But who are Tharus?
The Tharu tribe is the largest ethnic group from the Terai (southern lands of Nepal) and one of the largest in Nepal. Tharus have been living nomadically in the jungles of the Terai for hundreds of years. The Tharus call themselves the ‘people of the forest’. They are traditionally farmers and believe in nature spirits. Tharu’s culture and beliefs are deeply connected with nature. 

So, what did we ate?
-Ghonghi, escargots of Nepal. However, unlike escargots, gonghis are mud-water snails found in paddy fields of the terai (quite similar in taste to ‘common periwinkles’).
-Dhikri, a food item made from rice flour and shaped like a sausage. It is often served with chilli achar.
-Gangato, river crabs.
-Bariya, a special dry pancake made of rice flour, lentils, potatoes and spices.
-Jhinga, freshwater shrimps.
-Tharu Aloo, Tharu potato dish.
-Deruwa Machha, small fried fish.
-Bairik chutney, plum pickles.
-Anadi chamal roti, a pancake made of special rice.
