The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department has released body-worn camera footage of a deputy-involved shooting that occurred in #Fallbrook last week.

On Friday, April 21st, at about 1 AM, the Sheriff’s Department received a call from a female who reported her husband was despondent and threatening suicide at a residence located in the 4900 block of White Lilac Road. She stated she had hidden a firearm from him after he threatened to kill himself with it. As deputies responded, she reported he had another firearm and locked himself in a bedroom, adding that there were children in the residence.

Deputies contacted the caller outside of the residence and she confirmed the husband, identified as Jorge Alberto Sandoval of #Fallbrook, had access to a rifle and a handgun. While deputies were in the process of gathering information, he emerged from behind the residence armed with a scoped rifle. Deputies began to give him commands, but he continued to advance towards them and his wife as he pointed the rifle in their direction.

“One deputy fired his department issued rifle multiple times, striking the suspect in the leg and lower body”, SDPD said in a statement. This incapacitated Sandoval, who then dropped the rifle. He was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment. At this time, his injuries are considered non-life threatening.

Neither the deputies nor the children were injured in the incident. The female sustained minor injuries that did not require further medical care. Sandoval was arrested for Brandishing a Firearm in the Presence of a Peace Officer and Spousal Abuse.

“The deputy involved in the shooting has been employed by San Diego Sheriff’s Department for approximately fifteen years”, the department added. “The investigation and review process for deputy-involved shootings are extremely thorough. When the Homicide Unit completes its investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the deputies bear any criminal liability for their actions”. The Sheriff’s Department, Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board, FBI, and United States Attorney’s Office all also have a role in the incident.
