Lawsuits allege that companies like Meta, TikTok, and Snapchat design features such as infinite scrolling and dopamine-driven feedback loops to maximize engagement, likening the effects to substance addiction.
Research emphasizes that the severity of harm is best predicted not by total time spent online, but by addictive use trajectories characterized by compulsive use that interferes with major life functions. For adolescents, increasingly addictive mobile phone or social media use is associated with a two to three times greater risk of suicidal behaviors and ideation.
In response, the U.S. Surgeon General called for mandatory warning labels on social media to remind users the platforms have not been proven safe, a proposal requiring Congressional action. Separately, legislators and the FDA are focusing on regulations for generative AI chatbots for mental health care, prompted by lawsuits claiming they contributed to suicides.
