Описание к видео Wan Fayhsal's Strange War On The Rafflesia

In this video, we take a closer look at Wan Fayhsal’s recent call in Parliament to rename Malaysia’s largest flower, the Rafflesia. His argument rests on the idea that the flower’s name, derived from Stamford Raffles, carries the shadow of colonialism and should therefore be replaced with something more meaningful—perhaps even after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim himself. While the sentiment is framed as a gesture of national pride, it raises an important question: is this truly reformasi in action, or simply a distraction from the real issues facing the country?

The Rafflesia, known locally as Bunga Pakma, has long carried its Malay name alongside its scientific one. The notion that Malaysians have lived “under Raffles’ shadow for 68 years” ignores the fact that the flower was named in 1820, over two centuries ago, and that Raffles’ legacy is far more tied to Singapore than Malaysia. More crucially, one might ask whether the limited time and resources of Parliament should be spent debating flower names while issues such as unemployment, rural poverty, drug abuse, and social welfare remain pressing in places like Kelantan and beyond.

This debate is not without precedent. Across the region, questions of colonial legacies resurface in discussions about statues, street names, and institutions. Singapore chose a different path, keeping the Raffles statue and reframing it during its bicentennial as part of an art exhibit, a symbol to grapple with rather than erase. In doing so, they acknowledged the complexities of colonialism—its exploitation, yes, but also the systems it left behind such as rule of law—that became part of the city-state’s foundations. Malaysia, by contrast, seems to risk reducing reformasi to performative gestures if the focus is on symbolic renaming instead of substantive reform.

This episode invites us to reflect on a deeper question: what does it truly mean to decolonize? Does renaming a flower or removing a statue liberate society, or does it risk simplifying history into slogans and gestures? Perhaps the challenge is not to erase the past but to face it, understand it, and build something stronger by synthesizing lessons from East and West alike.
