In this LEGO history animation, we reconstruct the pivotal decision of January 31, 1917: Kaiser Wilhelm II’s approval of unrestricted submarine warfare. Guided by Admiral Holtzendorff’s tonnage math and urged on by Hindenburg and Ludendorff, Germany gambled that U-boats could starve Britain before America could act. Across the Atlantic, President Wilson weighed law and neutrality as sinkings—Laconia among them—hardened opinion.
Britain answered with data and discipline: convoys, Room 40 routing, hydrophones, depth charges, and seaplane patrols that turned commerce back into a system.
When the United States entered the war, destroyers to Queenstown tightened the escort screen. The result is a cinematic journey through the “tonnage war” and the convoy revolution that bent the loss curve and reshaped naval history.
