I love weeds and generally, I just live with them as weeds can be both food and medicine. But some people target weeds with weapons of mass destruction ie - weed killer and glyphosate. These products are actually bio-cides and kill life not just weeds. Such products have far reaching consequences as weapons of mass destruction in the garden and so I opt for more natural solutions when I have to remove weeds from paths, patios and paving.

These weapons of mass destruction that I refer to are dangerous to man, pollinators, other insects, animals, children, water ways, soil and all those beings that live in the soil. Glyphosate is toxic in itself (and is a recognised carcinogen) but the other ingredients in weed-killers make it more toxic as they work synergistically together. Apart from cancer, (and there are many thousands of cases suing the chemical companies ) a person using this weapon of mass destruction can suffer with neurological disorders, oxidative stress, neuro-inflammation, mitochondrial disfunction, memory loss, ageing, behavioural and motor skills disorders.
Some argue that the dose used for destroying weeds is too low, but think of the cumulative effects. Weather conditions have to be just right to prevent "drift" and leakage or spillage into soil and water. I would have to question the sanity of anyone who would use such a product on their garden, (where their children and pets play and where they grow food) when the companies providing the product recommend wearing bio-hazard gear when using their product??????
I rarely if ever kill the weeds in my garden as I use them for food and medicine. On the paths though, when weeds come through I use the following -
1) Boiling water
2) Lemon juice
3) Table salt
4) I make a spray with half a gallon of white vinegar, half a cup of salt, about 2-4 tblsns of washing up liquid, a squirt of lemon juice and about 10 drops of Clove essential oil . This is mixed well and applied directly to the weeds on the ground. I NEVER apply this to veg beds or to flower beds, ONLY to paths, patios or paving. It is cheap and effective and will not act as a bio-cide harming life.
