Why talk about this unexciting subject and why is it so crucially important? Simple: because many people keep saying that environmental issues are the greatest challenge of our time and the most important issue of our time. And the fact is that we cannot tackle any issue of environmentalism with any actual success in the real world unless we study supply chains and making supply chains lean.
For example, if you grow product in what are called vertical gardens inside large cities, then you don’t have to truck product as far to get in stores. This means it will take less gasoline, oil, wear and tear on vehicles, (and expense to companies) to ship produce to stores. This is better for the environment, reducing environmental pollution, and will save companies money. This is a “lean” supply chain.
This book, ‘Supply Chain Management in the Retail Industry’ by Michael H. Hugos and Chris Thomas, is a start to looking into this very important subject.
