The annual Girts Foulweather Race in February often has high winds and this year in the 25-30 knots range was exciting, as we finished the race from Anacortes to Friday Harbor in our fastest boat record, although we also broke the spinnaker halyard and then the asymmetrical kite itself.

This video is 17:40 showing J109 Hravn from dockside prestart to the night sail delivery home to Bellingham with lots of strong wind and exciting racing all day with friendships and festivities as sailboat racers gathered at Friday Harbor afterward. Thanks to the volunteers who prepare plenty of hot food and cold drinks for the racers for the party and race results gathering at the San Juan Island Yacht Club.

The Girts Race this year was particularly active, including my crew position as the mainsail trimmer, as big puffs created big loads, broken gear, and (nearly) a roundup with the full main and #3 jib.

This race is organized by the Anacortes Yacht Club with the collaboration and warm hospitality at the end of the race in Friday Harbor at the San Juan Island Yacht Club. The race is officially the Girts Rekevics Memorial Foulweather Race, in memory of a local legend and beloved racer.

Racing on J109 Hravn (Bellingham, WA) is always fun, with skipper Todd Koetje driving with enduring boat motto "A Good Time Every Time"

This video is shot in 4K with a GoPro Hero 11 Mini hung around my neck, which generally keeps my hands free. This was particularly important on this race -- February 22 2025 -- given gusty and high wind conditions, requiring lots of trimming and easing of the main sheet and traveler on the sporty J109 Hravn.
