Un nuevo año escolar comienza para Laura, Albert y Carrie. Nellie Oleson se egresa y será la dueña del primer restaurant y hotel de Walnut Grove. Laura Conoce a Almanzo, hermano de su nueva maestra, la señorita Wilder, y siente cosas por él, aunque sea mayor que ella. Más adelante, Laura, próxima a cumplir 16 años, obtiene un puesto de maestra, y será Almanzo quién la traslade de casa a su nuevo empleo. El cambio radical de Laura a mujer, poco a poco comienza a tener impacto sobre Almanzo, lo que nos lleva a un romántico desenlace, que se verá en las próximas dos entregas de este nuevo resumen.
