The objective of the maneuver was to free Yugoslavia from the clutches of the Nazis, who had taken over the country years before. Those dark days were coming to an end, and with the Allied advance, the Third Reich teetered on the brink of collapse. Now, the Soviet Red Army, the Yugoslav partisans, and the Bulgarian armed forces had united to expel Hitler's followers.
