Umbria, Italy | Beautiful Medieval Towns | Gubbio | Italian Street Festival: La Festa dei Ceri Piccoli
Gubbio is one of the most beautiful towns in Umbria, Italy so rich in art, history, traditions and nature. It is a lovely place with a medieval architecture and an unique personality which makes the visitor to adore it. Famous for its Roman Theatre, which dates to the 1st century BC, and the beautiful Piazza Grande (Piazza della Signoria), a "hanging" square overlooking the city, well known from the TV series Don Matteo, Gubbio has much more to offer. Its noble towers, beautiful churches, old squares, narrow streets are a real spectacle for the visitor who suddenly feels immersed back in the heart of the Italian Middle Ages and Renaissance. You can start your tour of Gubbio from Piazza Grande visiting the beautiful medieval monuments such as Palazzo dei Consoli (1332–1346), a Gothic-style palace that now houses a museum and the opposite Palazzo Pretorio, and then take a look at Palazzo Ranghiasci Brancaleoni, which is located in the same square. You can continue visiting the 15th-century Renaissance-style Ducal Palace (Palazzo Ducale) and the 12th-century Cathedral (Duomo), where you will discover the precious art piece of the Umbrian school representing the Christ sculptured in wood over the altar. Don’t miss the 13th century church dedicated to San Francesco with frescoes in the left side dating from the 15th century and the Basilica di Sant'Ubaldo, the church dedicated to the town's patron saint. Known as the "city of stone" and standing on the flank of Mount Ingino, Gubbio has several scenic terraces with breathtaking views of the surroundings. Many houses in the old town of Gubbio date back in the 14th and 15th centuries, and were originally the dwellings of wealthy merchants. The history of the town includes one of the most famous episodes in the life of Saint Francis of Assisi when the Saint allegedly tamed the wolf of Gubbio and made a reconciliation between the inhabitants of the town and the wolf. Gubbio is a beautiful town with its medieval charm waiting to be discovered by walking through its labyrinth of alleys and narrow streets.

Gubbio is famous for Corsa dei Ceri (Race of the Candles), a centuries-old festival that takes place annually in the town of Gubbio on the 15th of May. The festival is held on the occasion of the celebration of the town's patron saint, Ubaldo Baldassini. On this occasion, three monumental wooden structures (ceri), surmounted by statues of the town’s three patron saints of the arts, are carried by a team of men (ceraioli), in a procession, running through the streets of Gubbio on a 4 km journey from Piazza Grande to the Cathedral and climbing the top of Monte Igino to place the ceri inside the Basilica di Sant'Ubaldo. The streets are decorated in the colours of the three saints: the yellow of Sant’Ubaldo (patron of the town and protector of masons and stonecutters), the blue of S. Giorgio (protector of traders and artisans) and the black of Sant’Antonio (protector of farmers and students). The traditional medieval feast is repeated on the 2nd of June, the Republic Day, when the children have their own feast named La Festa dei Ceri Piccoli. Thousands of people from around Italy and the world come to witness the traditional festival Festa dei Ceri.
