In the summer of 326 BCE, Alexander the Great stood at the pinnacle of his conquests. His forces had swept across the known world, toppling the once-unassailable Achaemenid Empire and pushing eastward into the rugged and unfamiliar lands of the Indian subcontinent. This relentless, decade-long campaign had established an empire of unprecedented size, stretching from the Balkans to the Indus Valley. However, as Alexander and his army approached the Hyphasis River (modern-day Beas), they were not met by a rival king, but by a formidable wall of fatigue and discontent from within their own ranks.  

The campaign in India had been a far cry from the great, set-piece battles of the Persian War. It was a grueling and costly series of sieges against fiercely independent tribes and small, but tenacious, kingdoms. Alexander himself was wounded multiple times by the "stoutest warriors" of the region, suffering serious injuries to his shoulder and ankle during sieges of cities like Massaga. His most recent major engagement, the Battle of the Hydaspes against King Porus, had been one of his hardest-fought victories and had come at a heavy cost. The army, composed of veterans who had been away from their homes for nearly eight years, was battle-weary and homesick, their morale shaken by the constant and "fierce resistance" put up by the Indian soldiers and people.
