The Kafala system legally ties a worker to their employer, allowing for the widespread practice of passport confiscation and preventing workers from changing jobs or leaving the country. Human rights organizations have called this a form of modern-day slavery.

Indian recruitment agents often lure workers from impoverished regions with false promises of high salaries and good conditions. They charge illegal, exorbitant fees, pushing workers into a cycle of debt bondage before they even arrive.

Once in the Gulf, many face dangerous working conditions, long hours, and withheld wages. The tragic deaths of 45 Indian workers in a Kuwait fire, trapped in a building with no fire safety, is a grim example of the disregard for their lives.
