This is the chiptoolz rafter centerline locator and the way it works is you’ll find a general location of your rafter, which we will cover in another video.
You’ll then drill an access hole within 3” of either side of the rafter, using the same drill bit that you are using for the pilot holes for your mounts. However, the closer your access hole is to the rafter, the better so it’s definitely under the flashing.
Once the access hole is drilled, you’ll retract the key, insert the locating wire until the body is seated on the roof surface.
Then you’ll extend the key and rotate the body in either direction, until it stops.
Now this key head has a radius of ¾” which is ½ the width of a rafter. So the furthest edge towards the rafter indicates the center of the rafter.
You’ll mark the spot indicated by the outer edge of the key head. Then rotate the body around in the opposite direction until it stops and again mark the spot indicated by the edge of the key head.
Retract the key and remove the tool from the hole. Use a straight edge to connect the two marks and there is your rafter centerline.
Be sure to properly seal up your access hole when you’re finished.
