Test the feasability of a Phantom 4 lifting 250' of 18 gauge stranded wire. Was hoping to use the drone to lift the wire to act as a vertical antenna for use on the 160m amateur radio band. I know this would have gone better if the load was secured better. But I learned two things, even though the drone 'may' technically be able to lift the weight, its not made for it. The flight computer knows how heavy the drone is, adding weight throws the model off and it does not react well.

A few minutes after this test I unreeled the wire and did secure it so that it was balanced between left and right and front and back. I did lift the wire up to around 150'. The wind loading on the wire acted as a sail and it was enough to pull the drone off course. Even when landing the extra weight of a bungee cord and a few feet of 18 gauge wire was enough pull the drone down quicker than I liked. It can be controlled manually, but I think a kite would be better at lifting 250' of wire into the air to act as an antenna.

Would love to hear comments from those have tried either a kite or drone for such purposes.
