On June 23, 2021, Daniel Robinson arrived at a near the White Tank Mountains, west of Phoenix. He was a hydrogeologist tasked with taking groundwater samples. He met a coworker, Ken Elliott, who told police that Daniel Robinson was acting strangely.
After only a few short minutes, Daniel Robinson climbed into his 2017 Jeep Renegade and drove further into the desert. He was never seen again, and his disappearance remains unsolved.
Over the next week, police searched the Sonoran desert with cadaver dogs, UTV, and drones. A fixed-wing aircraft and helicopter searched the area around the White Tank park for the missing person, Daniel Robinson, and his 2017 Jeep Renegade. His father, David Robinson, drove from his home in South Carolina to participate and organize search efforts for his son.
Police continued their investigation into Daniel's life to look for clues for where he may have gone or what may have happened to him. They interviewed his family and friends, and they uncovered that he had been behaving strangely before his disappearance.
Police uncovered that Daniel Robinson had been driving as an Instacart driver for additional money. A few weeks before his disappearance, he had delivered wine to a woman named Katelyn and a friend. They asked if he wanted to stay, and he spent the night. Katelyn and Daniel continued to text for the following weeks, exchanging podcasts and small messages.
However, Katelyn soon soured on Daniel when he began arriving at her house uninvited and unannounced. Her security cameras identified him on her property. His messages confessed his preoccupation with her, and even his love for her. She responded by saying that she wanted him to stay away from her.
Daniel Robinson's last text message to Katelyn read, “The world can get better, but I’ll have to take all the time I can or we can, whatever to name it. I’ll either see you again or never see you again.”
On July 19, 2021, nearly a month after his disappearance, his vehicle was recovered in the desert. The 2017 Jeep Renegade was located in an area that had already been searched by aircraft and ground crews. It was on its side with many of the windows damaged or smashed out completely. It appeared to have suffered an impact on the lower front end. Shortly after discovered, monsoon rains flooded the area.
Jeff McGrath, a private investigator, was hired by David Robinson to independently review the evidence and provide his findings. After recovering the event data recorder within the vehicle, he discovered several strange findings. The vehicle had suffered a front side impact, then the Jeep Renegade traveled an additional 11 miles. After, it had 46 ignition cycles.
McGrath uncovered additional evidence that only raised more questions. There was red paint transfer on the side of the vehicle that could not have come from anywhere nearby, and the shattered glass at the scene did not match the vehicle. These discrepancies led McGrath to conclude that the scene looked like a staged event.
While many theories attempt to explain Daniel Robinson's disappearance, some have suggested that he is a victim of the Missing 411 phenomenon. The Missing 411 profile was proposed by David Paulides, and it outlines many shared characteristics among national park disappearances. Many have drawn a connection to this case.
Tragically, Daniel Robinson's disappearance was eclipsed in the media by the story of Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie. Thanks to the dedication of his father, the case has received renewed interest recently, even being featured on Dateline's Missing in America podcast.
Anyone with information about the case is urged to call David Robinson at (803) 200-7994 or the Buckeye Police Department at (623) 349-6411.
