The Uttam AESA radar is being developed for LCA Tejas MK1A will have 780 TRMs. It is a full solid-state Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) based active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar. It has a total of 18 modes in Air to Air, Air to Ground and Air to Sea roles. The X-band antenna has 780 T/R modules. The radar has been able to track an LCA Tejas Mark1 from a range of 140KM which is quite significant as LCA is smallest fighter in its category and has good stealth characteristics due to the usage of composite.

The AESA radar has 95% indigenous component with only one imported subsystem. It has the capacity to track 100 targets in the sky at a range in excess of 100km and engage four of them simultaneously.

The indigenous Uttam AESA has been fully flight-tested in all modes. The radar is being flight tested on two Tejas Mark1 fighter as well as on Hawker Siddeley 800 executive jet for over 250 hours. The National Flight-Testing Centre, which is manned by IAF, has already greenlighted the radar after successful performance tests.

After the successful completion of Uttam AESA radar program, On 26th August 2022, the Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) has formally completed transfer of technology (ToT) for the production of the Uttam active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited will be the lead integrator of the radar on the Tejas Mk-IA with four identified vendors including BEL being the suppliers of key sub-systems. Earlier HAL has reported to integrate Uttam AESA from 21st unit onward, however DDR has reported that Tejas Mk1A will be equipped with Uttam AESA radar from 41st unit onward.

As per reports from The New Indian Express, The Light combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mark1A will be the first set of fighter jets to be fitted with Uttam AESA radar in next six months to one year. Post the LCA Tejas MK1, the advance fighter jets like Sukhoi-30MKI and Mig-29 will be integrated with the radar system. The process of integration of Uttam on these platforms would begin by 2025.
