RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
AP CLIENTS ONLY

1. Wide shot audience
2. Medium shot producer being interviewed
3. SOUNDBITE (English) François D'Artemare, producer:
"Keywan Karimi is a very young Iranian director, he is 30. He had a condemnation in Iran and he made an appeal to his condemnation and when he got the answer to his condemnation in March, February, his sentence was confirmed and he asked me to - it was condemnation for prison and lashes - and he asked me to make the movie before going to jail. And we made it. And I don't know what is going to happen in the future. I don't know what will be Keywan's in the coming weeks, months, years. But we made a movie and Keywan maybe isn't a political activist, he's a director and he wants to make his movies in a free as possible way and I think it was important to produce this movie for this reason and to let him do it. Even more important than his political situation Keywan is a very talented director and I think it's important to help all the directors but as a producer I am obviously… when I meet a director as talented as he is I want to go on with him and to work with him and I think it's important for him to make his movies."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) ? Francois D'Artemare, producer:
"You will see the movie, no it's a story, it's a movie. Movies are not dangerous, they are movies, they tell stories and Keywan wants to tell stories. There are 200 ways to read a movie. But no, it's not a political movie, not at all."
7. Pull out of Keywan Karimi's empty seat with sign on
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Francois D'Artemare, producer:
"I feel a bit alone, a little bit sad to be alone with the empty chairs around me. And of course it's always a pleasure to present a movie and being alone without directors and without actors it's a little bit sad. But the film is beautiful so…"
9. Wide shot presentation of movie
10. SOUND UP (English) Fatima Bianchi, filmmaker:
"We're here today to celebrate the great talent of an artist and of a director and we are here to celebrate his film. But to those people who are listening we express quite clearly that we expect as a citizen as a man that he no longer, Karimi, no longer be oppressed as a citizen by the police and in any way put to any trouble, thank you."
11. Wide shot audience applauding
STORYLINE:
'DRUM' PREMIERES IN VENICE WITHOUT ITS DIRECTOR WHO FACES JAIL IN IRAN
Iranian director Keywan Karimi's debut feature film "Drum" ("Tabl") premiered Sunday (4 SEPT. 2016) at the Venice Film Festival.
The filmmaker was noticeably absent from the screening as he remains under house arrest in Tehran, facing a prison sentence and lashings for his last film.
Karimi was arrested for his 2015 graffiti documentary "Writing on the City." He was condemned to six years in prison and 223 lashes for "offending Islamic sacredness." In February this was reduced to a one year sentence, with the lashes remaining.
Despite his uncertain future, Karimi was determined to continue filmmaking and make his first fictional feature.
The festival kept empty chairs in the auditorium as a mark of respect to the filmmaker and his actors, who were also unable to attend at the last minute due to visa issues.
The French producer of the movie, Francois D'Artemare, was at the premiere to represent the movie and expressed his sadness at the situation.
