The Sect, The – Just Can’t Win …unreleased, recorded in 1966
The Sect was a folk rock influenced band that formed in Mesa Arizona, in 1966, by students of Mesa High School. The group originally came together to play surf songs, Beatles covers and other British Invasion bands including The Yardbirds. Band members were: Brad Reed (guitar and vocals), Rusty Martin (guitar and Vocals), Tom Smith (bass guitar), J.R. Lara (vocals and tambourine) and Buford “Corky” Allred (drums and vocals). The Sect quickly became a popular draw around the Mesa club scene and they also became the house band at a short lived club called “The Dungeon”. When they became the house band at The Dungeon they changed their name to “The Henchmen” in order to better reflect the clubs theme. Eventually the band moved on and switched their name back to The Sect. On August 17, 1966 the band recorded two original songs as a demo, “Simply Sunday” and “Just Can’t Win”, at Audio Recorders of Arizona. The demos were ignored by the big labels and the band split up in 1968 when all of the members had graduated. …These excellent songs went unreleased until 2003 when they were released on a single by Dionysus Records.
