Guitar chords are by far the most important skill to master as a guitar player. They make up 95% of the work that we do when we play songs. The irony is, a lot of times what we practice as guitar players will tend to be lead guitar.

This includes; scales, arpeggios and learning our favorite guitar solos. In this lesson, I’m going to show you how to understand a key’s harmony so that you instantly know what chords work in a song.

Along with that, I’m also going to show you a few additional ideas related to chord substituting (swaps) and options for using the diminished chord.

Prolonged neglect for learning chord harmony, as well as little effort applied at learning to hear and use chords from a key, are two of the most common reasons why a guitarist will lack skill at the knowledge of chord harmony.

When it comes to learning the basics for chord use, first take note of whether or not you understand key signature theory. This topic is the foundation, so any weakness at it may be detrimental.

When you do this work you would also want to understand scale tones and numeric step-wise degrees of a scale. If you understand both of these areas, you are most certainly ready to study everything involved with this lesson.
