Meghalaya: Umiam bridge to be fully operational from July 30, movement of heavy vehicles restricted

After a gap of seven months, the Umiam bridge will be fully operational from July 30, allowing the movement of vehicles from both sides. The government, however, has imposed a weight restriction on vehicles, limiting it to 4 metric tons (MT).

The decision was taken following a meeting of the High Power Committee held on July 29 in Shillong. The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Minister in charge of the power department Abu Taher Mondal, Chief Secretary DP Wahlang, Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang, consultants from IIT Guwahati, and several other senior officers.

Speaking to the media, Minister Abu Taher Mondal stated that the movement of heavy vehicles on the bridge will not be allowed.

"We have discussed about the restriction on heavy vehicles and inorder that it is being strictly implemented, we have decided to setup permanent barriers so that heavy vehicles with heights cannot pass through," Mondal said.

Concerning night super buses, Mondal said that they will continue to follow the restriction and ply from the same route that they are following which is the longer route.

The minister said that the government is concerned but cannot allow night super to ply from this bridge since they carry heavy load it can only be later when they will come up with a relaxation.

Construction of the Umiam dam and bridge began in 1958 and was completed in 1965. Over the years, the bridge has been subjected to constant traffic movement, leading to its deterioration due to fatigue. The renovation of the bridge has been carried out with a budget of Rs 19.9 crore.
