STORYLINE
Pakistani police on Saturday detained about 30 people, including a prominent human rights activist, for defying a ban on women running a race through the eastern city of Lahore, witnesses and police said.
Asma Jehangir, the former chief of Pakistan's human rights commission, and about 30 other male and female participants were detained at Saturday's race.
Authorities banned women from competing in such races after Islamic hard-liners - who regard women's participation in sports as against Islam - attacked runners at a similar event elsewhere in Punjab province last month.
Officials said police and other government officials had asked organisors of Saturday's race to obey the ban, but they refused.
However, one of the organisors said the arrests were "unjustified" and added participants had not committed any crime.
Witnesses accused police of being heavy-handed during the operation, saying some of the detainees were beaten.
However, police denied the allegations, added all rights activists would be freed.
They also said they had detained 20 supporters of an Islamic religious group who had gathered to oppose the race.
The race itself was cancelled because of the arrests.
