A tire blowout on a big rig can be very dangerous. Dave talks about 'what to do' in the event of a tire blowout when driving a semi.
It's vital to 'get control' of the vehicle. When a tire blows, the steering ability is comprised, so it's really important to be in control of the vehicle, with both hands on the steering wheel.
The second thing to do, is to slow the truck down carefully and pull off to the side of the road, or a safe place, depending on where you are.
It's critical to have your head about you and not panic in such a situation.
When stopped, don't fling the door of the truck open and jump out. That's very dangerous, and the driver can put himself in harm's way, especially when parked at the side of the road in heavy traffic.
Take a good look at the blown tire and assess the situation and the damage.
Then call dispatch and/or a repair truck for assistance. If the tire is a single, be sure to tell the repair truck you also need a rim if necessary.
Stay safe and do the smart thing.
Move slowly, think carefully for best results.
