1972 Toyota Corolla: Powder Coating

Описание к видео 1972 Toyota Corolla: Powder Coating

In this episode, I learn to powder coat the front chassis and suspension parts on my 1972 Toyota Corolla.

There wasn't too many things I needed for this task. I bought a single volt Powder Coating Gun from Eastwood, matte black painting powder, high temperature polyester high temp silicon plugs plugs, stainless steel wire....and a used oven, but I got that for free on marketplace!

The process was fairly straight forward, and I got a lot of information off of Donut Media's DIY Powder Coating video.

The Process:
1. Remove all the ball joints and bushings - I needed a ball joint removal set for this, I also used my vice grip a lot.
2. Sandblast the part clean - don't touch the part after with your bare hands! You have dirty hands!
3. Tie wire around the part and attach it to the grill. Stainless steel wire supposedly is the best for this grounding wise and corrosion wise.
4. Pre heat the part to get rid of any impurities, this also helps the powder stick to it.
5. Get a good ground, and powder coat the part.
6. Follow your powder manufacturers written specification. Mine was 450C till it flowed out, then 400C for 20 mins, then 375C for 20 mins to cure.
7. Let cool down
8. Install new parts.

The bushings were a bit of an issue when installing. I put them in the freezer before hand, but they still snagged when trying to press them into the control arm, and slightly disformed the metal. I stuck sockets in to prevent it from bending. If problems arise in the future, i'll probably go buy new control arms from Techno Toys Tuning.

Lastly, you might notice I look different from beginning to the end of this video, I lost almost 20lbs.

That's it, hope you enjoy, and let me know if you have any questions!
