In a display of his immense strength and pride, Ravana attempted to lift the entire mountain to bring it back to Lanka. However, his audacious act disturbed Shiva's meditation. To humble Ravana, Shiva pressed down on the mountain with his toe, trapping Ravana's hands beneath it and causing him great pain. Realizing his folly, Ravana turned to his devotion, composing the Shiva Tandava Stotram, a powerful hymn vividly describing Shiva's cosmic dance and divine attributes, as an earnest plea for forgiveness.

Impressed by Ravana's sincere devotion and the poetic beauty of the stotram, Lord Shiva forgave him and released his hands by lifting the mountain.
