The journey to mastery demands humility. Vidya (knowledge) paired with Vinaya (humbleness) leads to True Success, avoiding the destructive path of arrogance.
Jagadguru Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Mahaswamiji: "Learning or expertise (vidyā) is acquired through long years of dedicated endeavour under the guidance of a Guru. Focused effort and practice are the only means of acquiring mastery in any field – be it music, vedas, shastras, or anything else for that matter. There is a famous saying – विद्वानेव विजानाति विद्वत्जनपरिश्रमं. This means, the effort put in by an expert can only be appreciated by another expert.
At the same time, it is extremely important that vidyā is accompanied by vinaya (humility).
There is a shloka, which explains this through a simile:
विद्यया विनयावाप्तिः सा चेदविनयावह |
किं ब्रूमः किं प्रतिब्रूमः गरदायां स्वमातरि ||
Vidyā is the mother. The vidwān (scholar) is the son. For the son or child to develop well, the mother has to feed the child with milk. There is nothing superior to a mother’s milk to nourish a child.
Similarly, if a scholar is to succeed and flourish, the vidyā that he acquired should give him vinaya (humbleness). Vinaya is equivalent to the nourishing milk here. Vidyā is the mother. The scholar is the child.
Instead, if the same mother feeds poison to the child, then the child would be destroyed. Likewise, if the same vidyā gives the scholar ahaṅkāra (arrogance or pride), it will lead to his downfall.
While vinaya is equivalent of milk, ahaṅkāra is the equivalent of poison. विद्यया विनयावाप्तिः (vidyayā vinayāvāptihi) – vidyā should bestow vinaya (humility or modesty). सा चेदविनयावह (sā chédavinayāvaha) – If instead, it bestows avinaya (i.e., ahaṅkāra, pride or vanity), then it will be like a mother giving poison to her child. So say the shastras.
Therefore, scholars and experts should for ever remain humble in order to accomplish the best through their mastery, and reach the pinnacle of success in their lives."
