Google has introduced a new feature called their "Advanced Protection Program" aimed at protecting accounts at high risk of being specifically targeted. This requires that you can only log in with physical USB security keys as your two-step verification method, as opposed to security codes. It also restricts what info third party apps can access. This does however make things a lot less convenient, and some features wouldn't work at all. So it probably doesn't make sense for the average person to use.
