STORYLINE
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe denied on Wednesday that his government felt threatened by the mediation of Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez in the liberation of hostages held by the FARC.
During an interview with the Associated Press, Uribe insisted his goal was the liberation of hostages and said there had been no calculations as to who would get the credit, if and when that happened.
"Everyday I look for military action in Colombia to defeat terrorism. Everyday I push for Colombia's public force to rescue the hostages, but everyday I also look for options to free the hostages taking the humanitarian route," Uribe told AP Television.
"One has to fulfil their duties without making calculations."
Chavez has emerged as a potential dealmaker in part because the rebels have expressed an affinity for his leftist ideals and because he also had cordial ties with Uribe, despite deep ideological differences.
Uribe denied his government felt pressured by the international community to accept Chavez' help.
Speaking from New York, where the Colombian leader is participating in the UN General Assembly, Uribe said he appreciated the help of Chavez and Colombian Senator Piedad Cordoba in their attempts to mediate with the FARC for the liberation of over 60 hostages.
"In any case as president of Colombia I will give all my thanks to President Chavez and Senator Cordoba for their attempts, whether the situation is resolved or not," he said.
During his trip to New York, Uribe also met with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to discuss negotiations for a possible humanitarian exchange of hostages.
Uribe has said he would be in favour of a bilateral US committee being part of an upcoming meeting in Caracas between Chavez and the second leader in command of the FARC.
To that end the Colombian leader said Rice had not posed any obstacles, noting that the Unites States also had an interest in the release of the hostages since three of them were American citizens.
Uribe also discussed the free trade agreement that the US Congress still has to ratify.
