Cowboy poetry, western truth | Doris Daley | TEDxCalgary

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Performing her cowboy poetry that celebrates the humour, history and way of life of the west, Doris Daley takes us on rollicking rhyming road trip. Her insightful anecdotes reveal personal truths about following your dreams, supporting the community you live in and power of being present.

Doris Daley is an Alberta-born, ranch-raised, grass-fed, windblown, puffed and powdered, frocked and fringed, hale and hearty, happy-trailed, spangled and wrangled road warrior, wordsmith and western poet. She writes and performs cowboy poetry that celebrates the humour, history and way of life of the west. Her great grandfather came west with the North West Mounted Police in the 1870s; her family has been ranching in the Alberta foothills for five generations.

Twice voted top female cowboy poet in North America, she makes her living as an emcee and featured performer on stages large and small wherever friends of the west gather throughout Canada and the U.S. In 2004, she was named Best Female Cowboy Poet in North America by the Academy of Western Artists (AWA)—the first time any Canadian, male or female, has won the cowboy poetry category. In 2009, Doris won top honours for Best Female Cowboy Poet and Best Cowboy Poetry CD at the Western Music Association (WMA). She lives in Turner Valley, Alberta.
