DMZ Portable Keeper

In the Demilitarized Zone where no shooting or record is allowed, there is a light and a song seen and heard only in the night created by DMZ Portable Keepers, unidentified organisms, whenever they encounter mines, weapons, or lost souls. Armed with those sounds and light they make as they light up, they are the guardians of the DMZ.

I visited the DMZ after the North and the South had blown up their border guard posts (GP) on each side of the Military Demarcation Line according to the agreement reached at the Inter-Korean Summit in 2018. I thought about evaporation as I overheard standby orders and radio signals several times on my way to the frontline. The GPs of the North and the South are located in the immediate vicinity, less than one kilometer from each other. I was not allowed, however, to look toward the North and was warned that a camera lens might be mistaken as a weapon. To me, the DMZ was like a black hole.


I came up with the background of 'DMZ Portable Keeper' based on the news covering the two Koreas. “It is an extra planet as well as an immense aquarium, a glacier, and the ruins of a war where helmets and gas masks are scattered all over. At the same time, it is where all these are found. This organism scans the surface like a mine detector. In the scene where missing people are saved, and extinct animals and plants are brought back to life, firefly-like organisms, which are horizontally lined up, start to sing.” However, ‘communicating’ such a scene was not possible. Furthermore, as DMZ portable keepers were described as unidentified flying objects as big as a cuttlefish bone, the production went further into the unknown. That is what the DMZ is like.

DMZ Portable Keeper

어떤 촬영도 기록도 허락하지 않는 DMZ에는 밤에만 들리는 노래와 빛이 있다. DMZ 포터블 키퍼라고 불리는 미확인생명체들이 만드는 현상이다. 지뢰나 무기를 발견하거나 길잃은 영혼을 만날 적마다 스스로 울면서 타오른다. 이 소리와 빛의 파장이 DMZ를 지켜 준다.

2018년 남북정상회담이 합의한 내용에 따라 군사분계선을 사이에 두고 있는 GP를 폭파한 후의 현장을 방문했을 때였다. 나는 몇 차례의 대기명령과 무전기 신호를 훔쳐 들으며 최전방으로 올라가고 있었다. 그 속에서 증발에 대해 생각하고 있었다. 남북 감시초소들은 상호 1km 이내에 근접해 있었다. 그러나 북쪽을 쳐다보는 것도 안되고 카메라의 렌즈도 무기로 오인할 수 있다고 주의를 들었다. DMZ는 블랙홀 같았다.


'DMZ포터블 키퍼'는 현재 벌어지고 있는 남북한 실제 뉴스를 바탕으로 배경을 구상했다. “태양계 바깥의 행성이며 거대한 수족관이고, 빙하이자 헬맷과 방독면이 나딍구는 전쟁 폐허인데 이 모든 것이 동시에 모여 있다. 이 생명체는 지뢰탐지기처럼 표면을 스캔한다. 실종된 사람들이 구원을 받고 멸종된 동식물이 되살아나는 장면에서는 세로로 늘어선 반딧불 같은 것이 노래하는 장면이 펼쳐진다.” 그러나 이런 장면을 ‘소통’하는 일은 불가능했다. 게다가 DMZ포터블 키퍼가 우주선 같은 미확인 비행체인데 크기가 갑오징어 뼈 같은 것이라고 했을 때 프로덕션은 점점 미궁으로 빠져들었다. DMZ는 그런 것이다.
