I got a viewer request. In this problem we are outside and want to find the height of a flag pole. We know our height is 6 ft and we are able to measure our shadow which is 4 ft and the flag pole shadow that is 20 ft. The 2 triangles created by the shadows have the same angles. How do we solve for the height of the flag pole
There is a thing called the property of similar triangles. If the angles are the same then the ratio of the side length of the triangles relative to those angles are the same.
So the height of the person divided by the length of shadow of the person is equal to the height of the flag pole divded by the length of the flag pole shadow
Now we can plug in all of our numbers
And rearrange the formula to get what we are solving for height of the flag pole to one side
Plugging those numbers into the calculator we get a flag pole height of 30 ft.
