The specific operations are as follows: First, farmers clear away weeds, fallen leaves, and debris around the grape trunks to ensure there is no accumulated water or residual diseases and pests at the trunk bases. Then, they select dry, thick straw and cut it into strips with a width matching the thickness of the trunks. Next, they tightly wrap the straw strips around the grape trunks—starting from the ground at the base and winding upward to the area just below the first main branch fork—and secure the strips section by section from bottom to top with hemp rope. This prevents the straw from being blown off by strong winter winds while further enhancing the thermal insulation effect.
This cold protection method boasts distinct advantages: the fibrous structure of straw can trap air to form a stable insulation layer, which effectively blocks the intrusion of external cold air and reduces the amplitude of sudden temperature changes on the trunk surface. Compared with other cold insulation materials such as crop stalks and plastic films, straw has better water resistance, which can alleviate trunk rot caused by rain and snow seepage, and it also has a longer insulation duration, providing continuous protection against low temperatures throughout the winter. In addition, this method is simple to operate, flexible in material collection, and relatively low in cold protection cost.
