There are few creatures within Dungeons and Dragons more iconic than the Mimic, a monster with the ability to change its shape to disguise its body as an inanimate object, most commonly as a treasure chest. The mimic has a powerful adhesive that holds fast to creatures that touch it, allowing the mimic to beat its victims with its powerful pseudopods. The mimic was introduced in the first edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons game's original Monster Manual and has appeared in every subsequent edition. Several variants of the creature have been introduced, with a variety of abilities and sizes. Dungeons & Dragons (commonly abbreviated as D&D or DnD) is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game (RPG) originally designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. It was first published in 1974 by Tactical Studies Rules, Inc. (TSR) and has been published by Wizards of the Coast (WotC, now a subsidiary of Hasbro) since 1997. D&D's publication is commonly recognized as the beginning of modern role-playing games and the role-playing game industry.
